Preface to the catalogue

This is an index of sixteen hotels, kept in four drawers and nothing more. The categories were chosen because in each of them the building itself is the subject: a hotel that commissions its own art, a hotel that shrinks the room to a sleeping unit, a hotel that also runs a gaming floor, and a hotel that is carved out of snow and will not survive the spring.

Each hotel gets one card. A card carries a call number, the name, a short written description and two or three stamped labels — no scores, no prices, no reviews, and no means of making a reservation. Where a fact would need checking before you relied on it, the hotel is the place to check it.

Closing note

The count is fixed deliberately. Four cards to a drawer means every entry has to earn its place, and it means the whole catalogue can be read through in a single sitting rather than browsed forever. When something better comes along, something else is pulled.

Nothing on these cards has been bought. No hotel has paid for its place, no link here is an affiliate link, and no rating has been invented to fill a gap. If a card is wrong, the contact page explains how to tell us so.
